WHAT'S NEW

Weatherzone launches enhanced stormtracker

April 2008

Sentinel Hotspot data produced by Geoscience Australia is now available on weatherzone's stromtracker application.

The Hotspot data is produced from a number of Polar Orbiting Satellites that are continually monitoring thermal heat signatures across the globe. The two main satellites "Terra" and "Aqua" orbit the earth every 24 hours gathering high resolution data, each one passing over Australia two or three times every 12 hours.

This new data will be very useful for disaster management groups, rural fire services and those who are most at risk for bushfires.

Fairfax weather

September 2006

Today The Weather Company and Fairfax Digital launched new weather sites for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age websites. The new highly graphical weather sites replaced the previous text based service that had been running for several years.

Readers of The Age and SMH websites now have access to comprehensive weather for their local area via a new map based navigation system. Weather radar and satellite animations are also available.

In additional to local weather the Fairfax Digital weather sites include local water storage readings, air quality forecasts and world weather information.

The Age and SMH weather was built and hosted by The Weather Company.

Weatherzone launches world's most advanced internet radar viewer

August 2006

With weather now one of the country’s hottest topics, Australia’s most popular commercial weather site, www.weatherzone.com.au, has launched the most advanced radar and satellite viewer on the Internet.

The highly interactive new radar and satellite features allow users to track lightning, hailstorms and rainfall quickly and accurately. They can add or subtract roads, borders, rivers and towns as reference points and track up to two hours of recent rain and storm activity – more than four times longer than any other weather site.

Weather is more engrossing than ever before now that Australia is regularly knocking off long-held records for drought, rainfall and temperatures.

“It’s definitely evolved from the ‘nerdy’ territory it used to have years ago. There is also a bit of fun to be had. We had a steady stream of positive emails as soon as the new radar went live – people love their weather,” said Weatherzone’s managing director Mark Hardy.

www.weatherzone.com.au is already the country’s most popular commercial weather-related site and is run by The Weather Company which supplies information and interpretations to 80% of Australia’s TV broadcasters.

In fact, the majority of Australians know whether to take an umbrella or a hat every day thanks to The Weather Company’s team of nine world-class meteorologists who are based in North Sydney.

More than 1.2 million users visit www.weatherzone.com.au every month and information is gathered from government and non-government sources and combined with content generated in-house.

Interestingly, weather sites are among the most popular among Australian internet users, with www.weatherzone.com.au beating sites like The Australian Stock Exchange site and domain.com.au for unique visitors.
